    Optimal Fat to protein ratio

Currently 2 weeks in to the carnivore diet and have been doing great but last couple of days starting to feel a bit sluggish, I have been averaging a ratio of 60% fat to 40% protein and just wondering if my fat ratio should be higher

Some people do fine on 40:60 protein:fat ratio, but for me, 60% fat is a bit too low. Try bumping your fat up to 70-80% and see how you feel. I definitely noticed an improvement in my energy when I raised my fat intake!

@csouthwell84 I agree with @Melissa Miyashiro -- we sit best at a 70-73% fat intake as do most of our clients. I would say higher fat is particularly important for females and hormones, and only leverage a lower fat percentage if you are actively trying to lose weight. Don't skimp on protein, though!

I have been testing this very thing. I have been as high as 80/20 (f/p) and as low as 60/40 (f/p), and I agree that the 70/30 range is the best for me as well. I have been using 85/15 ground beef, but this time I am getting 70/30 (grass fed/finished).

@Melissa Miyashiro and @Jody Watts What are your primary sources of fat? Some fats digest and agree with my stomach more than others.

I for the higher level levels, I use 70/30 ground beef, the fattiest ribeyes I can find, suet, butter, duck fat. I find that it generally works out without much effort. If you know some fats that work for your digestive system, stick mostly with those.

Without knowing how long you have been on a high fat diet, keep in mind that it might take some time for you system to get used to that much / kind of fat.

I heard eating raw suet is really easy to digest, but unfortunately I don’t have access to it in Hawaii. So I eat fat trimmings off of brisket I buy from Costco and find I can digest the cooked fat and rendered fat from it.

@Melissa Miyashiro that sounds like a good alternative. I don't actually eat that much suet, I stick more to the fats on / in meats. You can order tallow, lard, duck fat from Amazon and they work great for cooking things in. I personally love my eggs cooked in duck fat :)

When I have followed Keto in the past and was highly fat adapted I could push my protein higher and be fine on a 60/40 ratio even as high as 50/50 for a period. Because i Was experimenting with high carbs prior to starting carnivore I believe I need a much higher fat ratio currently because I no longer have the higher fat adaption

Agree; I do best sitting around the 70/30 range.
